Ever since George Michael announced he was coming to Tampa on his first tour in the US in 17 years I’ve been rocking out with some of his classic hits. Mostly, they just make me dance around my desk and get dirty looks from the other people in the office. Seriously, try to listen to “Monkey” or “Too Funky” without getting down!
But the song I’ve been playing over and over again is “Faith”. Because, really, underneath the great hook (and this classic video) is something vaguely inspiring.
“I need someone to hold me, but I wait for something more… because I’ve gotta have faith”
That isn’t just a great ass shaking hook, but a mantra that sort of help us singles who are highly monogamous. Let me be clear, not everyone is cut out for monogamy and there’s no reason why those people should be forced into a lifestyle they aren’t into. There’s lots of people who seem more comfortable with polyamory (multiple romantic relationships at one time) or casual sex or even short term one-on-one relationships. For some people, familiarity really does breed contempt.
But that isn’t me. I, like a penguin, mate for life. Or at least that is my preference. To be honest, it is hard to be a long term monogamist in society. There is so much pressure to just find someone for “right now” and that you need to sleep with a lot of frogs before you find the right person. If you’re a single person there is this demand that you find somebody, anybody, to complete you. Even if it is clear that they aren’t going to last longer than the weekend.
And there have been times I’ve thought about just giving in and just having flings. Because I do need someone to hold me, but I wait for something more.
Because I’ve got to have Faith.
Faith that there is a reason why I am more excited by the idea of being with the same person for 50 years than having a new lover every night. Faith that I know myself better than complete strangers who tell me to play the field do. Faith that somewhere out there is someone who wants the same things. Just because he isn’t here right now, doesn’t mean that he won’t be here at some point.
And just because it’s a great video
