Dear Rhonda - science isn’t a popularity contest

Rhona Storms’ “Academic Freedom” bill has made it through committee, which means that this piece of crap is one step closer to becoming a law. The bill offers protection for students and teachers that offer alternative theories to evolution. This is in response to the recent decision that evolution would be taught in public schools. Before that we didn’t have to learn about evolution. In fact, in college I learned more about this basis of biological understanding through our literature’s class reading of “Inherit the Wind” than I did in any of my science classes.

We are doing our schoolchildren a huge disservice by not teaching evolution. When they go off to college and take a bio class they are expected to already understand the basics of the theory. I actually failed my first semester of biology 101 in college because I was totally lost.

Anyway, this “Academic Freedom” bill would mean that teachers and student’s could feel free to present evidence opposing evolution as long as it’s objective. Never mind that most of the evidence opposing evolution are deeply flawed or based on lies. I once had someone tell me that there must be an intelligent designer (i.e. God) because look at how perfectly a banana fits into our hands. He designed us and our food to be easy to eat.

I’m not sure why that designer would have made pineapple then. Because that food is a bitch to eat.

Under this law a SCIENCE teacher in a SCIENCE class could ignore the shit-ton of SCIENCE proving evolution to teach that we must be created by God because we’re too neat to have happened by chance. Also, a student couldn’t get a lower grade for presenting alternate theories in their answers on homework or test questions.

This is going to make science class much easier. I can aruge that all of my answers are based on alternate theories and are right to me!

Science isn’t based on opinion. It isn’t a popularity contest. You can’t have your own take on science. It is objective reality. You can hate evolution. You can decide that your faith in the Bible will overrule any scientific evidence to the contrary. But you can’t ask the rest of the world to deny the science just because it is uncomfortable for you.

Science doesn’t work that way.
