A few weeks ago Florida entered into the 20th Century by actually mandating the teaching of evolution in the classroom.
Evolution has been shown to be true over and over again. Look at drug resistant bacteria as exhibit A. But if you don’t believe in evolution because you think God made people, that fine. You can teach that in your church and home. But school is a place for facts.
And the FACT is that evolution is the basis of our current understanding of biology. End of story. Everything else is smoke and mirrors to try and force schools to teach faith instead of reason.
Which is exactly what Rhonda Storms wants. She is proposing a State Senate bill that would allow teachers to teach whatever they wanted in terms of biological origins. She says it’s to protect people from being discriminated because of their believes. But people aren’t being discriminated against because they believe in creationism, only when they take the next step of teaching it. You can believe whatever you want. But when you are hired as a science teacher you need to teach the science standards.
What’s next? Can a history teacher tell the class the Holocaust didn’t happen because he doesn’t believe it? Can a health teacher tell everyone that AIDS doesn’t actually exist? These are all sincerely held believes by some stupid people, but we wouldn’t ever imagine actually allowing these ideas to be taught in school, because there is no proof.
Creationism should be viewed in the same way.
Rhonda Storms is such a life failure that this bill will probably never make it out of the Senate. But it if does we’ll be ready to fight it!
